President’s Message – April 2014

Greetings Frogs

Happy spring.............. I think. It looks like the winter is not letting up but hopefully April will bring some warmer weather. Here is what's coming up for the club in April.

On April 3rd, Jeff Goodreau and Ryan King will be giving their presentation on the wrecks of the Presque! Presque Isle Michigan is a hidden gem for the wreck diving community. Lake Huron's cold, clear fresh water has protected its shipwrecks from the effects of time and decay and diving there is like opening a time capsule into a forgotten time. Join us as we take you for a photo tour of this hidden gem of the north and display the amazing wrecks that await the adventurous diver.

On April 10th we will have an important meeting to vote on the proposed changes/updates to the bylaws.

On April 17th Dave Caldwell and Heather Knowles will be giving their presentation on the USS Nezinscot. While steaming from Portsmouth to Boston carrying a cargo of chains, anchors and search light equipment for the USS Missouri, the steam tug USS Nezinscot capsized and sank when a deck load shifted in heavy seas off Cape Ann on August 11, 1909. Of the nine-person crew, there were four fatalities. Join us as we describe the story of the USS Nezinscot – it’s sinking, the sensational aftermath following the tragedy, and one group’s discovery and exploration of the wreck in 2007, nearly 98 years later.

On May 3/4th, we are planning an event to the IMAX Theater at the Aquarium to see the following 3D films: Journey to the South Pacific, and Great White Sharks, each 40 mins long. The Sharks movie will be at 2pm and the South Pacific movie is at 3pm. We will also be meeting for Dim Sum at Chau Chow City at 11am at 83 Essex St in China Town. We need to reserve 2 weeks in advance to obtain a group rate for the films. Single film $9.95, double $14.95 without group discount. Group discount rates are $8.95 for single film, $12.95 double feature. We will be asking interested members to pick either the Sat 3rd or Sun 4th and we will pick the date most members are interested in. We will need to order tickets in advance to prevent sell out of event and to get the group discount. Please contact

Bill Werner before April 18th at billwerner55@yahoo.com to reserve your spot!

On Saturday April 19th at 9am, the Finatics Dive Club is joining the Massachusetts Audubon Society to clean up the Eastern Point Wildlife Sanctuary, a.k.a the Dog Bar Breakwater. Please consider joining us for an hour or two to help make a difference! Please contact Laura if you are planning to join us!

We will have our annual Easter Egg Hunt Dive at Stage Fort Park on Sunday April 27th at 10am! This year the Easter Bunny will be diving with full attire! The Easter Bunny will be dropping special treasures to find! Prizes and fun! Join us for the event! Post dive party to be announced!

I would like to name Amy Maurer as member of the month for her efforts in getting Janna Nichols from REEF to come and give a presentation. I would like to name Mary Howard & Ray Porter as Divers of the month for hosting their annual St. Patrick's party. Freddy and Francine had a great time at the party!
