President’s Message – March 2014

Greetings Frogs!

It's been a long winter but we have been making the best of it. We had a great turnout for our Ice Diving With Frogs Event. I want to thank Jennifer Entwistle, Gary Michaud, Jim Barbara and Stephen Sullivan for supporting the Frogs with the Ice Diver Event. It was a beautiful day out on the ice and we had a fun dive on "The Lady of The Lake". A special thanks to Michael Nalen from Aquatic Escapes for his help in coordinating and teaching the Ice Diving Course/Event. Also a special thanks to Aleksey Averin for his help as an instructor for the ice dives.

March is going to be a very busy month. Janna Nichols will be giving her presentation on how to conduct REEF surveys and how they are benefiting scientists and conservationists. Adam Hartnett and Shaun McGuire will be giving a presentation on their dive trip in Hawaii.

The Boston Scuba Show is on March 1st. The Sea Rovers Clinic will be held on March 8th & 9th. Please sign up to help man the booth All information including web links, directions, and how to purchase tickets can be found on the North Shore Frogmen website. Simply click on "Event" then click on the blue option on the right of the screen: "View as Calendar". From there you can click on each event to read all of the pertinent details of each event.

We will have our first Wing Night of the year on Thursday March 13th at the Hong Kong Cafe at 12 Maple St in Danvers at 7pm or whenever you can get there after work. They have really good food and drinks! Join us!

Mary Howard and Ray Porter will again be hosting their Annual St. Patrick's Day Party at their house at 529 Franklin St Reading around 4pm! Bring your beverage of choice and something to share!

I would like to name Gary Michaud Diver of The Month for supporting the club by participating in the club's Ice Diving Class/Event. Thanks for your support! I would like to name Jim Barbara as Member of the Month for continuing his duties as VP even after having knee surgery. It's not easy dealing with the raffle prizes bag and the AV equipment while hobbling along on crutches! Thanks Jim 'aka' Tiny Tim! : )

It has been brought to my attention that we do not have

a mascot for our club. Lots of clubs and sports teams have mascots. Faith Ortins told me that DUI has a mannequin mascot named Bernie. He has a female counterpart and they are planning to marry them off this year! As club president, I knew it was very important for the club to obtain a mascot!

I found inflatable pool-toy frogs online (don't ask!), but they came as a boy and a girl set. We now have our new mascots Freddy Frog and his girlfriend Francine Frog. Perhaps they should also be married? We can't allow them to live in sin! : ) Check out Freddy and Francine in the attached photo! They were in attendance at our Diving With Frogs Event! They will be attending all of our upcoming events from now on.

We will hold two Nudibranch Safari dives at the Gloucester Dog Bar/Breakwall on Sunday March 16th at 10:30am and Sunday March 30th at 10am! The Dog Bar has been a fantastic place to spot several types of nudibranchs, skeleton shrimp, and stalked jellyfish! Winter is almost over but that has NOT deterred us from enjoying winter diving! Spring is just around the corner and I hope to see you guys in the water very soon! : )

Coming NSF Presentations:

REEF Presentation – Janna Nichols – March 6

Want to do more on your dives and make them count for something?

REEF (Reef Environmental Education Foundation) teaches recreational divers how to monitor marine life while they have fun diving. Training and surveying is free and easy (and a bit addictive) and can be done anytime, anywhere! Come find

out how it works and why it's such a rapidly growing citizen science program.

Janna is REEF's Outreach Coordinator. She has been a PADI scuba instructor, and an AAUS scientific diver. Always interested in marine life identification and underwater photography, many of her photos appear in fish ID books and publications. She has conducted over 800 REEF surveys (most in the cold waters of the Pacific NW), and leads the REEF Pacific Coast Advanced Assessment Team. Janna was chosen as REEF's Volunteer of the Year in 2003 and as Dive News Network's 2013 Diver of the Year. Her goal is to spread her enthusiasm about the REEF Fish Survey Project and turn everyone into fish geeks. Resistance is futile!

Hawaii Diving – Adam Hartnett and Shaun McGuire – March 20

Adam and Shaun will give a slide presentation on their recent dive trip to Hawaii.

Presque Isle – Ryan King and Jeffrey Goodreau – April 3

Presque Isle Michigan is a hidden gem for the wreck diving community. Lake Huron's cold, clear fresh water has protected its shipwrecks from the effects of time and decay and diving there is like opening a time capsule into a forgotten time. Join us as we take you for a photo tour of this hidden gem of the north and display the amazing wrecks that await the adventurous diver.

Boston Sea Rovers Clinic – March 8 & 9 – Celebrating 60 Years

Get your tickets to the 2014 Boston Sea Rovers Clinic, at the DoubleTree by Hilton Boston North Shore in Danvers, MA.

Doors open to the exhibit hall at 8:45 on Saturday and at 9:15 on Sunday. In the exhibit hall you can see most of the dive gear you’ll ever wish to own, and find out about wonderful dive destinations.

Seminars are held Saturday from 9 to 5 and Sunday from 9:30 to 4:30. There are 39 great seminars schedule for presentation by our local divers and friends, and by internationally famous divers.

Brian Skerry will be Master of Ceremonies for the Saturday Night Film Festival which will include presentations by Dr. Sylvia Earle, Paul and Gracie Atkins, Adam Ravetch, Chuck Davis and Berkley White. If you’ve never attended a Sea Rovers Film Festival, make this your first time! Space is limited, so get your tickets early.

Attend the party after the Film Festival, with music by The Wetsuits, all underwater photographers. And don’t forget to help out at the Froggy booth in the exhibit hall.
