President’s Message – July 2014

Happy Summer Frogs!

I hope you have been enjoying some fantastic diving!

I would like to name Ellen Garvey as Diver of the Month for all she does for the club and Mike Garvey as Member of the Month for organizing the photo shoot.

We have a lot of upcoming events for the month of July and I hope to see you at these events!

On July 10th Jason Krumholz will be giving a presentation on rebuilding reefs with artificial reefs. Susan Copelas will be giving a presentation on diving Indonesia on July24th.

On July 12th we will have an all-day beach meeting/dive/cookout on Pebble Beach! Bring your food, grills, beach blankets and dive gear! Rain date for Sunday the 13th.

On July 20th we will run a club dive charter with Boston Scuba to do two dives at Graves Light. The cost is $80 per diver. Call Boston Scuba to reserve space at (617) 418-5555. We will meet at Boston Scuba by 9:30 to do waivers and load gear. The charter will depart at 10am. The address is: Boston Harbor Shipyard and Marina

256 Marginal Street, East Boston, MA 02128

July 26-August 3rd is Vermont week with Pat and Annette! We will be setting up a sign up sheet for the days that people wish to attend.

On Saturday July 26th is the Great Annual Fish Count! You must register for a Reef ID to participate. It's free to register. Simply go to http://www.reef.org/. Let me know if you are interested in participating. The Frogs will be diving Old Garden Beach for the Fish Count Survey. Then we will go to Stage Fort Park to turn in our surveys and enjoy a cookout and a chance to win prizes.

We are now selling tickets for our Club Whale Watch on Saturday Sept.13th! We are able to secure a group rate for tickets at $25!!! These tickets are usually $48, which is a huge savings!! Metro West and Finatics Dive Clubs will be joining us for this whale watch trip. The boat holds 150 people. The company is called Captain Bill and Sons. They have marine biologists on board that have been studying the whales for years and they are excellent at narrating about the whales. Please see Adam if you want to sign up and buy a ticket. We also have a PayPal link set up for people to purchase tickets as well. Add $1 to the ticket price if you purchase through PayPal since they charge a $1 service fee. Go to the North Shore Frogmen website for the link. You don't want to miss this!

We will be organizing some night dives soon. The squid are coming back and they are fun to see on a night dive. Stay tuned....

Great Annual Fish Count

The 13th Annual GAFC will be held on July 26th, 2014!

Coming back for the 13th year in a row, you can help count fish and win prizes!

Each year divers help researchers by surveying fish populations. This is done by identifying what fish you see on a dive. After the dive, we gather at Stage Fort Park in Gloucester for raffle prizes and a BBQ!

On the morning of the event, participants go for a dive, swim, etc and pay attention to what fish they see and how many there are. Then, after the dive we meet at Stage Fort Park and eat some great food while we fill out a survey of what we saw on each dive. Experts are on hand to help identify any confusing species.

We are consistently the largest single-day REEF fish count event in the country, even beating out warm- water destinations like Florida and Hawaii.

All you need to participate is a free REEF membership, and a basic knowledge of New England fish. There are several ways you can learn how to identify what you see:

Ted Maney introduced a new section on algae and invertebrates at the NSF meeting on June 19

Bob Michelson will be giving his fish ID course at the July 16th NEADC General Meeting

There is now an online version of Bob

Michelson's Fish ID course. It is available at
