Coming NSF Presentations:

Ice Diving Presentation/Training – Mike Strickland – February 6

Mike Strickland from Aquatic Escapes will be giving an educational presentation on Ice Diving at our meeting on February 6. The presentation will cover the instruction needed for those getting their Ice Diver Certifications. Others are welcome to attend to learn about Ice Diving. The presentation starts at 7:30, and will be followed by a brief Regular Club Meeting and dive talk. Arrive between 6:30pm and 7:30pm for social hour.

International Human-Powered Submarine Races – Vincent Malkoski – February 13

The International Human-Powered Submarine Races are held every other year at the Naval Surface Warfare Center Carderock Division in West Bethesda, MD. The 2013 races kicked off on June 24.

Each team must develop a one or two-person "Wet" submarine. Crew members breathe SCUBA from the air supply carried aboard. Each sub is unique, designed from "scratch," and relies upon novel techniques for propulsion and guidance. The International Submarine Race's TM specific goals are:

Contestants include universities, high schools, individuals and research labs. Various awards are given out at each ISR, including ones for best overall performance, innovation, speed, speed by category, best use of composite materials and spirit of the race.

Vin Malkoski of the Massachusetts Division of Marine Fisheries has been acting as dive safety officer for these races. He will give a presentation about this event to our Club on February 13.

REEF Presentation – Janna Nichols – March 6

Want to do more on your dives and make them count for something?

REEF (Reef Environmental Education Foundation) teaches recreational divers how to monitor marine life while they have fun diving. Training and surveying is free and easy (and a bit addictive) and can be done anytime, anywhere! Come find out how it works and why it's such a rapidly growing citizen science program.

Janna is REEF's Outreach Coordinator. She has been a PADI scuba instructor, and an AAUS scientific diver. Always interested in marine life identification and underwater photography, many of her photos appear in fish ID books and publications. She has conducted over 800 REEF surveys (most in the cold waters of the Pacific NW), and leads the REEF Pacific Coast Advanced Assessment Team. Janna was chosen as REEF's Volunteer of the Year in 2003 and as Dive News Network's 2013 Diver of the Year. Her goal is to spread her enthusiasm about the REEF Fish Survey Project and turn everyone into fish geeks. Resistance is futile!
