Presidents’ Message - September 2013

Happy Summer Froggies!

I hope everyone is having a nice summer and you are getting in some nice dives!

Several Frogs got to do some diving and kayaking in Vermont and had a great time there. I would like to name Pat and Annette divers of the month for graciously hosting us at their home in Vermont. They are awesome!

Also, we got to party with "The Most Interesting Man in the World" at Jim and Linda D'urso's pool party. I would like to name them as members of the month for putting on a nice pool party at their house. You guys Rock!

Some upcoming events for September I'd like to mention. I will be planning some night dives over Labor Day weekend on Friday and/or Saturday nights on Aug 30 & 31 since high tide will be around 7-8pm on those nights. We've had some really nice night dives at Folly Cove and OGB. The squid and other marine life have been plentiful, so join us. I will send email updates as the dates get closer.

Susan Copelas is hosting a cook out at her house near Magnolia Rocks on Sunday, September 9th. I am putting together a morning charter on Cape Ann Divers the morning of the cookout. More details on the cookout and charter to come.

The Club Picnic and the Bay State Council Treasure Hunt are on Sunday Sept 22. Mark it in your calendar since it is a fun day to attend a cook out, dive, and win prizes. That is all for now. Much planning to do for upcoming events! Happy Diving!

Dive Talk:

-Ray, Mary, Mike & Ellen were in St

Vincent on Andy Martinez’s trip.

Andy is very giving of his time and expertise to help people with photos; highly recommended for everybody.

-Jim B and son to Pompano Beach, FL; their first drift dive. Huge loggerhead turtle; lots of tropical fish; didn’t see any lionfish.

-Jim & Adam went to Folly Cove, saw the torpedo ray on the R side. Thermocline at approx. 30 ft at high tide.

-Bruce & Cheryl went out w/ Undersea Divers & Cape Ann Divers. First time in NE, terrible, underweighted. Flounder, lobsters, sea urchins. Second dive w/ better weighting was better. Also Rye Harbor in NH; flounder, crabs, etc. Bruce was diving 3mm suit w/ no hood! Also Lake Winnipesaukee; dropoff to 90’ about 100 yds out.

Great viz; rocks w/ swimthrough; big bass; need flag as boaters are everywhere.

-Susan went to White’s w/ a class. Watched a flounder attack a crab. Next dive saw a huge ball of squid eggs that had broken off – biggest she’s ever seen.

-Laura with Markus & Todd to

Halfway Rock. Got to 106’; lots of anemones, soft coral, rose fish in crevice!

-VT diving: Lots of current in the CT River looking for the mill wheels. Tried several different depths. Finally

found 2 mill wheels in 7’ of water.

John F and Annette managed to get a chain through them, and a crane operator there pulled them out of the water. Hans and Dave Cunningham were there also.

-John F today w/ Ralph A; John got 12 lobsters, Ralph 7. Saw the big torpedo ray. John grabbed a lobster right in front of the ray which picked up and rolled over him. There were some huge lobsters and lots of eggers. John suggests putting several large pieces of kelp in your catch bag to quiet the lobsters.

-Jeff & Gary went to Lanes Cove on Sunday; one 3# lobster.

-Jack dove the NH. While digging with his chisel, he detonated a bullet; it was loud. Arnie was about 4’ away.

Another time the motor of the boat he was on died going through the cut bridge just as all the tuna boats were going out; they spun a lot, dragged anchor, etc.

General Discussion:

-Jesse was diving on FL and his primary hose blew; luckily at 10’. Attributed to hose protector wear.

It’s happened to Susan also. John recommends periodically changing the swivel connection to your gauges.

-Looking for someone to run for VP, Treasurer or Secretary for next year.

Raffles: Dollars Box: Bill Werner

Mystery Prize: Ray Porter

Bug Bag: Jim Barbara

22-Aug-2013

A beach meeting was finally held at Pebble Beach. The water was a bit rough and the potential divers who showed up determined that there wouldn’t be good enough vis for a fun dive. The food and company was enjoyed by those who attended.

Life Magazine Photo Shoot of the NSF in 1959

Mike Garvey

On September 9 I visited Art Channell to pick his brain about the location of the Life Magazine photo shoot of the North Shore Frogmen in 1959. Ellen and I had searched the Pigeon Cove area earlier in the summer and found nothing fruitful.

By way of background, Art was a very active member of the NSF in its inception; he was an officer of the Club for 25 of the 35 years that he was active. Art is front and center (in the pink wet suit) in the photo from Life Magazine. Art wrote a column for the local newspaper entitled “Air Bubbles”, relating the dive activities of the NSF.

After studying a few charts that I had brought with me, Art suggested that we visit the site. On the way Art recounted some stories of

the early days of the NSF. The initial membership of the Club was limited to 20; Art had to wait for three months for a vacancy (becoming the 21st member). When Life Magazine approached the Club, they agreed to provide some color wet suits which were quite new on the market. The usual approach to wet suits in 1959 was to buy a sheet of suitable material and cut and glue it together to fit. The Club drew straws to see who would get which one of the colored suits; Art drew the pink one.

When we arrived at the site, Art described the scene in 1959: Alfred Eisenstaedt, the well known photographer, was positioned high on the shore looking downward toward the rocks and the water. Photography went on for the better part of an hour (around low tide). The actual picture that Life used was taken at the end of the session as some of the divers were relaxing; some divers had decided the session was over and had moved out of the picture (beyond the floats in the picture above). Life Magazine subsequently sent a number of prints to one of the Club members; this collection “went missing” for a time and was later found, destroyed by dampness.

Art was of the impression that we were at Pigeon Cove; the nearby signs identified the location as “Plum Cove Beach”. NOAA charts

and Google Earth similarly identify the site as Plum Cove. Art and I did not dwell on this discrepancy.

Art and I concluded our visit with a bowl of delicious lobster bisque at the Lobster Pool Restaurant.
