Presidents’ Message - April 2013

Hello Froggies!

I want to thank everyone for their help with Sea Rovers. I am naming Vinny Egizi diver of the month for getting the free booth display for the club. I am naming Ellen Garvey as member of the month for all her hard work on the booth display panels. She spent hours painting every individual panel and then used a sponge technique to make it really fancy! Our booth display looked incredible! Thanks for everything you guys did to make that happen!

We had a great Club presence at Sea Rovers. We handed out lots of flyers to interested divers. Our booth generated a brand new membership and encouraged some previous members to attend the last meeting. I hope they will rejoin us for 2013 since we have a lot of exciting things planned this year.

So much for the Ground hog's predictions for an early spring! Hopefully the storms will be winding down and spring will be approaching us ....eventually. So now I would like to focus on what's happening for the month of April. We need divers to participate in the annual Palmer Cove Float Cleaning on Sunday April 7th @ 10:00am. We need volunteers to donate about an hour of their time to scrape the growth off of the floats at the Yacht Club. Participation is a notion of good will on our part, since they allow us to hold meetings there for free. After the float cleaning, we can do a fun bottle dive in the same area. The Yacht Club will provide those that participate with free lunch and beer!!!! How can anyone turn that down? We need at least 10 divers. If you are interested in volunteering please contact John Sears or Laura Gallagher ASAP!

The Easter Egg Hunt Dive and Party will be happening on Sunday April 14th!! We will have an Easter Egg Hunt dive at Stage Fort Park in Gloucester at 10am. Prizes will be awarded and the Easter Bunny will be there in his dive gear to hand out candy to all that attend! After the dive, we will have a spring cook out at Dodie Carvalho's house.

We have some great presentations coming up. Both Fred Calhoun and Taye Evans will be guest speakers in April. We will also be planning our second Nudibranch Safari dive with the Finatics on April 21st. East Coast Divers is having their Diving Social Event at the White Horse Tavern in Allston on Fri April 19th. So with the storms winding down and spring around the corner, I ask this pressing question: Is it time to go diving? Why, yes it is!!! : )

-5/4-5: DUI Demo Days at Stage Fort Park. They would like the Club to have a table. There will be a dinner on Saturday night, celebrating 50 years!

-Comedy/pizza night has been moved to June 13.

-Membership: John F is meeting a potential member at Sea Rovers on

Sunday.

Old Business:

-Ellen & Mike refurbished the booth which Vinny obtained from his company. We got 2 and could sell one, though we may want it for parts.

-Ellen located 2 original copies of the life magazine with the NSF 1959 picture and had it blown up to use in the booth. One copy of the magazine will be for the Club; the other will be raffled at some point.

New Business: We voted in favor of combining our Holiday Banquet with the Finatics this year, perhaps at the ICC. The idea would be that would get

a nicer place and more people, and it would be closer to Rt 128. Cost to the Club is about the same. We recognize that it would change the dynamic of the event and we might want to move the awards and such to a different venue.

Dive Talk:

-Jim & Gary went to Winter Island. 39˚F, 20 ft, 34 min. Both diving wet. Auful vis, saw rocks and a crab.

-Laura had a nice dive on the Gauntlet. See pictures of brass fire extinguisher on FB; she didn’t find it, but liked the find.

-Faith has been doing test dives 2-3 times/wk with the new electrically heated insulation. Very pleasurable.

Saw a stargazer fish she’s never seen in 11 years of diving in San Diego. went to a pool to check out new equipment (overhauled regs)

-Dive this weekend cancelled due to Sea Rovers and weather.

Raffles: Dollars Box: Mike Garvey Mystery Prize: Jim Barbara

Bug Bag: going off next meeting. After the business meeting, we had a

great presentation from Susan Copelas on her diving in the Philippines!
