Presidents’ Message - February 2013

As we head through the winter months, I have this lingering question. Is it

Coming Up

time to go diving? Well, Yes it is! The winter months are a great time to see

nudibranchs, go wreck diving, and of course ice diving! We had a nice bottle

February 7: Movie Night –

dive at Palmer’s Cove last Sunday. There were seven divers and two of them

Ocean Frontiers episodes 2&3

came back with antique bottles! It's great to see so many Froggies actively

(see page 6)

diving this time of year!

As you may have heard, we have voted on some changes to the club's

February 21:

meeting schedule. I have heard from many of you that the club has too many

Presentation: Ellen and

meetings and that the meetings start too late at night when they have to work

Mike Garvey – Papua New

the next morning. These were some good points. Dodie mentioned to me

Guinea (see page 6)

that the Frogmen club was formed before the internet and that made it

necessary for the club to meet on a weekly basis. Now that we have the

February 23: Boston

internet, we can keep everyone informed of business, events and activities.

Scuba Show (see page 9)

We have email, Face Book, we have a website with Air Bubbles and online

calendars. So it makes sense to conduct business meetings twice a month.

We will conduct business meetings on the 1st and 3rd Thursday of each

month, unless there's a holiday conflict. Then we can swap for a different

Thursday and the change will be made in enough advance to post in AB, FB,

Members: If you are not getting

the website and email reminders. All other Thursdays we meet will be social

regular emails regarding dives and

meetings. So you can still join us at Palmer’s Cove but we won't conduct

other events, and you would like to,

business on those social meetings. Starting in February, we will meet at 7:30

please contact President Laura

instead of 8:00pm, and everyone is welcome to meet every Thursday night

Gallagher (searaven00@yahoo.com

but business meetings will be reduced to the 1st & 3rd Thursdays of the

or at 508 843-2395 or on FB) and

month.

Treasurer Vinny Egizi

On Feb 7th we will be continuing with the next segment of the Ocean

(vinnymass@yahoo.com) with your

Frontiers film. The Ocean Frontier segments are great. So many things go on

best email address for these

behind the scenes to help preserve our oceans. On Feb 21st Ellen and Mike

communications.

will be giving a presentation on Papua New Guinea. I am really excited to

see Ellen & Mike's presentation also. I have always wanted to go there.

I would like to thank Markus Diersbock for all his work on updating the

website for us. I would like to name Markus as member of the month for

In this Issue:

February. I am naming Graham Smith diver of the month. He gave a great

presentation on antique bottles and jugs that he's recovered from Palmer Cove

-We came out ahead in 2012. Can perhaps fund a few more activities this year – lots of ideas.

-The $165 collected for Bay State Council in 2012 was transferred to that organization.

Committees:

-Program: See website for details.

-There should be a program committee. Jim Barbara volunteered and will take over the schedule and calendar. Bill Werner might be a candidate to be on the committee.

-A planning session for the year’s events will be held Jan 6, 1pm, at the

Garvey’s house. Everyone is invited. We’ll have soup, snacks and drinks!

-Scheduled events:

-Film tonight.

-1/20-Bottle dive at PCYC, meet at 10:30, w/ presentation 1/17

-NOTE: Vermont week dates need to change to August 4-11!!!

Froggy’s site. John needs application forms.

- Air Bubbles: Jan issue was published

New Business:

-Boston Scuba Show is Feb 23

-We decided that raffle prizes will be raffled off less frequently and be more substantial.

Dive Talk:

-New Year’s dive was “awesome”. 4 clubs and 2 dive shops represented. Tiaras and boas were well received. Saw nudis, sculpin, crabs.

-Dive this Sunday at Fort Sewell. Meet at BK 8:45 or contact Jim B or Meg.

10-Jan-2013

Meeting called to order: 8:07PM Attendance: 4 Officers, 13 Members

Secretary: Business portion of minutes from last week read and accepted.

Committees:

-Program: See website for details

-1/15-NE MSC lecture

-1/17-Graham Smith old bottle presentation

-1/20-Bottle dive at PCYC

Old Business:

-Boston Scuba Show on 2/23. Bill W will be point person. Anyone who wants to work the booth and take advantage of our tickets is asked to donate $10 to the club; normal price is $20. Since the booth will be in the meeting room, you won’t miss any presntations. (Amy, Susan and Meg are in.) Additional members can get in for reduced price of $10.

-Proposed to pay for booth at Sea Rovers, fee is $285 (reduced from $300) ; passed unanimously.

New Business:

-Proposal to change meetings to 1st and 3rd Thursdays of each month. List of pros and cons was discussed. It was noted that traditionally the meetings had been held every week for communications purposes, but with email, website, Facebook, etc., that need is greatly reduced. It was also noted that other clubs meet once or twice a month; no other club meets every week. 1st and 3rd Thursdays were chosen as they would not conflict with other clubs, and would possibly be easy to remember. Passed with 14 in favor, 2 opposed.

Visit our website at www.northshorefrogmen.com

2

-Proposal to change the start time of the meetings from 8pm to 7:30pm. List of pros and cons was discussed. It was noted that no one time would be ideal for everyone, so we are trying to find the time which best fits the needs of most. Passed with 13 in favor, 3 opposed.

-Proposal to allocate $275 to trademark the NSF name and logo. Advantage to protect our identity; if it ever becomes a problem it could be expensive. 13 in favor, none opposed.

-Proposal to raise the “dollars bos”

50/50 raffle to $2 rather than $1 because of the reduction in # of business meetings. Rather than that, members will be encouraged to play for $2.

-Dan (who will not be renewing membership) has the password for Scubaboard; Adam will contact him for it.

Dive Talk:

-Meg, Jim & Gary went to Fort Sewell, got scallops. 35 min. Meg dove dry, the others wore wetsuits.

-Dive this weekend: Laura will investigate and send email.

General Discussion:

-Whoever gets to PCYC first should turn the heat on in the meeting room when they arrive.

-We miss Mike Denneler!

-Laura reported on the killer whales that were stuck under ice, and a giant squid was filmed for the first time.

Raffles: Dollars Box: Amy Maurer Mystery Prize: Meg Tennissen Bug Bag: Jeff Lynch

17-Jan-2013

Meeting called to order: 8:06PM

Attendance: 4 Officers, 14 total Members, 1 Guest

Secretary: Business portion of minutes read and accepted.

Treasurer:

-New officers will be added to signatory card

-Dues are due ($42)

-At this time, 24 paid members

Committees:

Air Bubbles – February 2013

-Program: See website for details

-Air Bubbles: Jan 20 deadline

Old Business:

-We cannot do the logo and name on the same app. Proposal made to spend $ to trademark “North Shore Frogmen”; passed unanimously. We will copyright the logo.

-Booth: Vinny may get one from his company for free. We reviewed existing equipment which seems adequate; the large display sign is probably too much for Boston Scuba Show, but would be good for Sea Rovers.

New Business:

-Bylaws: Most recent version was handed out to interested members. Motion to form a bylaws committee to review and propose updates; motion amended such that the committee will be appointed by the President. Discussion: members of the board of directors can be on the committee. Motion passed by membership.

Dive Talk:

-Laura, Jim, Bill and Steven Sullivan went to Chandler Hovey Park in Marblehead. 10 ft vis.

-Dive this weekend: Bottle dive

Sunday 10:30 at PCYC. It will be low tide; lift bag not necessary.

General Discussion:

-Salem is looking to put a 380’ wind turbine on Winter Island.

-Graham showed a number of interesting artifacts that had been retrieved from Palmer’s Cove from

PCYC, including a huge jug, old hand-blown bottles, Lydia Pinkham bottle, Moxie bottle, bottle from Ireland used for ballast, medicine bottles, Essex milk bottle, whisky bottle, etc.

Raffles: Dollars Box: John Marren

Mystery Prize: Ray Porter

Bug Bag: Jack Munro

24-Jan-2013

Meeting called to order: 8:06 PM

Attendance: 4 Officers, 13 total Members, 3 Guests

Secretary: Business portion of minutes from last week read and accepted.

Treasurer: We have money.

After the regular meeting, Nick Fazah

gave a talk on free diving that was quite amazing.

Committees:

-Program: See website for details.

-Let Susan know if you want to go skiing from Dodie’s the weekend of

Feb 8. If not enough interest, Dodie can postpone.

-Members are being asked to sign to man the booth at the Boston Scuba Show (see Ellen RE: reduced entry) and at Sea Rovers, and to lead Club dives for a month.

-Membership: We’ll give John the list of folks that have not yet renewed their membership so he can contact them directly.

Old Business:

-A By-laws Committee has been formed (Vinny, Ray and Mike G). Club members with suggestions for consideration should speak with a member of the Committee.

-The free booth that Vinny mentioned is available. Vinny will get it to see what it’s like. There are missing panels that would be $1200 to replace, but perhaps we can work around that.

New Business:

-Laura proposed a comedy/pizza night, and has an ex-member, Bob Seibel, who is a professional comedian and is available. Laura will work on details with the Program Committee.

Dive Talk:

-Laura, Jim, Graham, Jack, Michael, Gary and Eric did the bottle dive off PCYC Sunday with topside support from Mary and Ray. Several shag rug aeolis nudebranchs were identified. Graham found several bottles, no one else found any. Jack found something mysterious that needs cleaning before he can identify it..

General Discussion:

-Mike and Dawn’s wedding anniversary (I heard 37th???) is today!

Raffles: Dollars Box: Laura Gallagher

Mystery Prize: Ray Porter

Bug Bag: Raffle started for nice mask from Undersea Divers.

Upcoming Events…..

The Film: Ocean Frontiers: the Dawn of a new Era in Ocean Stewardship

We will watch the last two sections of this movie (Florida Keys and Gulf of Mexico) at our meeting on February 7. Last chance! We have to return the dvd to the Bay State Council after this.

As the blue planet’s burgeoning populace faces an uncertain future, never before have the world’s oceans been called upon to serve so many, while suffering so much. To address this, people around the world have begun using new approaches to ocean management. It is a movement of scientists, businesses, farmers, fishermen, governments and citizens who care for the sea.

Saving Whales at Stellwagen Bank

[This section was viewed at the meeting on 1/3/13]

An Ocean Blueprint for Florida Keys

The coral reefs of the Florida Keys are America’s most popular marine destination, home of myriad sea creatures, magnet of sport fishers, divers and sightseers. Lately they are also America’s showcase of marine conservation zoning, providing refuge, recreation, and livelihoods, through a collaborative plan developed by all concerned.

Iowa Farmers & Gulf of Mexico

The Mississippi Delta—terminus of America’s mightiest river, nursery of one of the nation’s premier fisheries, and lately an unfortunate poster child for ecological disaster—is getting help from an unlikely team of people, in an unlikely place. More than a thousand miles upstream, in the cornfields of Iowa, farmers are changing their ways to send cleaner water and new life to the nation’s beleaguered Delta.

Port Orford Fishermen Protect Ocean & Way of Life

[This section was viewed at the meeting on 12/13/12]

(from the website: http://Ocean Frontiers.org/)

PNG Presentation by Ellen & Mike

On February 21, Ellen and Mike Garvey will be giving a presentation on their trip to Papua New Guinea (PNG) last March. They dove at the Tufi Dive resort for 10 days, then traveled in the mountains for 3 days capturing local images and taking in native dances and presentations. The primary presentation will be underwater images and movie clips from Tufi. If there's time and interest, the mountain region presentation is also available.

The presentation will be after the business portion of the meeting of North Shore Frogmen at PCYC in Salem, MA.

NSFC Ski Vacation in Vermont

February 7-11

Contact Dodie Carvalho or Susan Copelas if you are interested in participating in this chance to stay in Vermont to enjoy the snow and good Froggy company.

See more complete info in January issue of Air Bubbles.

If there’s not enough interest at this time, Dodie may propose a later date.

Bay State Council Meeting

The next Bay State Council of Divers meeting will be held on Wednesday, February 27, 7:30PM at the SSN’s clubhouse located at the corner of Quarry Street and Joyce Road in Quincy.

All are welcome to attend!
