Presidents’ Messages - January 2013

I just want to say thanks for the opportunity to be president for the 2013 diving year! It was a close election. The competition was fierce and my opponent ran a dirty campaign. Ok just kidding : )

I remember attending the meeting where we had to pick officers for the club. For some reason at that moment, I thought of Paul Sauvageau. I remember how much he loved the club and the members and I share that sentiment as well. So I offered to step up because this is a great club and I love the people that make this club great. My wish as president is to dedicate the upcoming year to Paul. I hope we can all work together to make him proud. I'm really excited about all of the upcoming diving, presentations and activities. I can't wait to hear from all of you about any ideas or suggestions on activities, diving, or presentations that will make things more fun. I am eager to get started with planning and working with you because I believe you all have great things to contribute.

I have reached out to friends in other dive clubs and they are excited to work with us on combining activities. The more the merrier and it's a big ocean! I am excited to announce that Tony has organized our New Year's Day Dive on Jan 1st at Back Beach at 10:00am. Dodie has been kind enough to offer to host an after dive party at her house around 12:00. The Dive Finatics will be joining us on the New Year's Day dive.

This month Nick Fazah will be giving a presentation on Jan 24th on his free diving competition at the Blue Hole. He has plenty of video as free divers from all over the world meet to break world records on a single breath of air. I have been following his blog on FB and it is amazing what these divers can do. We are still coordinating activities and presentations for the Jan. month. If any of you have ideas that you can contribute for a presentation or activity, please let me know ASAP.

I would like to name Tony Vieira as diver of the month for organizing our New Year's Day Dive at Back Beach. I would like to name Dodie Carvalho as member of the month for hosting us for an after dive party on New Year's day. Thanks to them for helping us celebrate the new year in style! :)

Meeting Summaries

13-Dec-2012

Meeting called to order: 8:06PM Attendance: 4 Officers, 9 Members

Secretary: Business portion of minutes read and accepted.

Treasurer: We lost money on the banquet because of lower attendance than expected and therefore fewer raffle tickets sold. Ideas for next year: have some non-diver prizes, different kinds of prizes, participatory raffles, etc.

20-Dec-2012

Meeting called to order: 8:10 PM Attendance: 4 Officers, 11 Members

Secretary: Business portion of minutes read and accepted.

Treasurer:

-Turns out we lost only $127 on the banquet. For future reference, we should assume raffle tickets at $10/person rather than $15, since it’s been steady at $11-12 pp for several years. We might want to switch to Danversport for a change of scene for the banquet for next year; would cost some more, but a nice venue and they do all the work. Vinny will call to find out if dates available.

-Vinny filed for tax exempt status.

-Dues are due. We have 20 paid members; 26 life members; 3 associate members in military; 4 officers; 11 honorary members.

ANNUAL RISER LECTURE .

NSFC Ski Vacation in Vermont

February 7-11

Spend five days in Vermont skiing, snowmobiling, cross-country skiing, snowshoeing, or just having fun from Thursday night through Monday morning, February 7th through 11th. Dodie Carvalho is inviting you to join her and Ron Blais in Bellows Falls, VT. Their tickets allow them to ski midweek, so they can ski Thursday at Sunapee on the way up, Friday Okemo or Stratton, and Monday at any of these three resorts on their way home.

For those who want to just play in the snow during the weekend we'll be snowmobiling at the cabin (if there's snow). There are crosscountry skiing resorts along Rt. 11 in VT, and at Grafton, VT less than 30 miles away if resort trails are preferred. You can also crosscountry ski or snowshoe on the snowmobile trails at the cabin if you'd like.

The cabin is in "easy" driving distance to several ski centers ... Stratton (37 miles or 55 minutes), Okemo (25 miles or 35 minutes), and Mt. Sunapee (34 miles or 50 Minutes). Killington is a little over an hour.

The log cabin has two twins and bunk beds upstairs, with a half bath off/in the twin room. There's one queen bed with electric blanket in the unfinished basement, with a hospital portapottie which can be used as well. Dodie also has a folding bed which can be put up anywhere. Someone could sleep on the sofa. Sleeping bags with or without air mattresses could be on the living room floor. I have a full bath on the first floor where my bedroom is. Therefore we could comfortably sleep eight guests, and with sleeping bags more. (The bathrooms would obviously have a tight schedule!)

We'll share food costs equally. The cabin is about 135 miles from Rockport to Bellows Falls and takes about 3 hours 15 minutes with a break along the way. Space will be given on a first "call" basis. Call me at 978- 546-2566 to reserve a bed.

~ Dodie Carvalho.

Air Bubbles – January 2013

The Film: Ocean Frontiers: the

Dawn of a new Era in Ocean Stewardship

As the blue planet’s burgeoning populace faces an uncertain future, never before have the world’s oceans been called upon to serve so many, while suffering so much. To address this, people around the world have begun using new approaches to ocean management. It is a movement of scientists, businesses, farmers, fishermen, governments and citizens who care for the sea.

Green Fire Productions has traveled the country from coast to coast, capturing stories of these ocean pioneers—people who are embarking on a new course of stewardship, in defense of the seas that sustain them. We can learn many lessons from these ocean pioneers; in a sense, we’re all ocean pioneers, steering uncharted waters in a sea of rapid change.

Saving Whales at Stellwagen Bank

In the bustling shipping lanes of Boston Harbor, what was once a recurring collision of giant vessels and endangered whales has become a model for conservation in a crowded sea. Marine biologists, shipping executives and an energy company have come together, taking cues from the great whales’ travelways, and finding room for both commerce and wildlife.

An Ocean Blueprint for Florida Keys

The coral reefs of the Florida Keys are America’s most popular marine destination, home of myriad sea creatures, magnet of sport fishers, divers and sightseers. Lately they are also America’s showcase of marine conservation zoning, providing refuge, recreation, and livelihoods, through a collaborative plan developed by all concerned.

Iowa Farmers & Gulf of Mexico

The Mississippi Delta—terminus of America’s mightiest river, nursery of one of the nation’s premier fisheries, and lately an unfortunate poster child for ecological disaster—is getting help from an unlikely team of people, in an unlikely place. More than a thousand miles upstream, in the cornfields of Iowa, farmers are changing their ways to send cleaner water and new life to the nation’s beleaguered Delta.

Port Orford Fishermen Protect Ocean & Way of Life

In a small fishing community on the coast of Oregon, the people of Port Orford are taking control of their destiny, by conducting their own brand of conservation.
