Presidents’ Messages - July 2012

Happy Summer! Dive season is really underway and the water seems to be fairly comfortable (that being a relative term, of course). We just had our first beach meeting and the weather was perfect! Hopefully we'll have a repeat for July's beach meeting on the 26th.

Plenty of stuff coming up in the near future: The Great Annual Fish Count is on July 28th. See elsewhere in this newsletter for more details! And, if you are planning on coming to the annual Vermont camping/diving trip and have not already done so, please email Vinny the dates you are planning to attend.

This month, I'd like to name John Ferrier as Diver of the Month for being at the BK lot for Sunday morning dives so frequently. And, Markus Diersbock is Member of the month for doing a great job as webmaster and taking care of the website.

Happy Diving!

Meg!

Vermont Diving/Camping

RESCHEDULED

Please note that the Vermont Diving and Camping and hanging out and having a fun time week has been rescheduled to August 5 through 12.

Please let Vinny know the dates you plan to be there so he can forward that information to Annette and Pat. Annette has found some new places for us to dive. I think she is also hoping we might help some people who lost some precious possessions in the flooding in Vermont last year.

Plan for a fun time in August!

Other Dive-Related Events

July 28:

11th Great Annual Fish Count

Coming back for the 11th year in a row, you can help count fish and win prizes! Each year divers help researchers by surveying fish populations.

This is done by identifying what fish you see on a dive. After the dive, we gather at Stage Fort Park in Gloucester, for raffle prizes and a BBQ!

The raffle is now valued at over $5000!

There will be a picnic ($5 donation), raffles, and a touch tank. Every diver who submits a survey form will get an entry into the raffles. We are expecting more than 100 divers to participate in the day’s celebration.

How does it work?

Simply get underwater (even snorkeling), fill out a survey for the fish you see, and turn the forms in at Stage Fort Park before 1:30PM. Every diver who fills out a survey gets an entry in the raffle.

You will need a REEF ID number to register to participate in this event. If you don’t have a number, join REEF (it’s free!) now at http://reef.org. Then email Bob Michelson (pbm.inc@verizon.net) to let him know you plan to participate, and at what location.

WHAT IS REEF? REEF provides the SCUBA diving community a way to contribute to the understanding and protection of marine populations. REEF achieves this goal primarily through its volunteer fish monitoring program, the REEF Fish Survey Project.

OCEAN FRONTIERS

This new film takes us on an inspiring voyage to seaports and watersheds across the country to meet an intermingling of unlikely allies of industrial shippers and whale biologists, farmers and fishermen, snorkelers and many more, all of them embarking on a new course of cooperation in defense of the seas that sustain us.

Special guest for post-film discussion is Winston Vaughn of the Conservation Law Foundation.

This is an 80 minute film, and will be followed by a brief, facilitated discussion. Films are shown in the Murphy Bunker at the MSC, which is ADA accessible. Popcorn and lemonade are served half an hour before the program begins.
