President’s Messages - November 2012

The days are getting darker, the air, and water temp, is getting cooler...it must be November. It's becoming dry suit season for those that have them, though, I still believe it's always wet suit season. Even though, the year is quickly coming to a close, we still have plenty going on. On Nov 15th, Andy Martinez will be presenting; his presentations and photos are always worthwhile. It should be a great show.

For the photographers, there's also the photo contest! Pictures will need to be submitted to Bill Werner by Tuesday the 27th at the latest, with voting on the 29th. That evening is also officer elections for next year. It's not too late to be nominated, so let someone know if you're interested in serving!

There's also the banquet quickly approaching on Dec 8th. Tickets are on sale now, if you haven't already gotten yours, contact Vinny or any other officer. Entertainment will be DJ Dawn Boltas, and Cafe Salerno will again be catering.

I'd like to recognize two reliable club members this month Jeff Lynch as Diver of the Month and Ray Porter as Member of the Month.

Happy diving!

Meg!

-Mary’s birthday is tomorrow; Ray brought cake and ice cream.

General Discussion:

-Vinny sold the wedding ring he found in the river in Vermont. Financed his trip!

-Al reports that “Deli House” across from Shetland is really good and very reasonably priced. Nice people. Perhaps we should have them do the

pizza for the pizza party.

-Casa de Mode is looking for underwater photos to use in the front window. Al will be the liaison. Perhaps we should ask that submissions to this year’s photo contest be donated to the club (then loaned to Casa de Mode)

Dive Talk:

-Graham went to the parking lot 2 weeks ago and nobody showed – weather was terrible.

-John F – last Sunday, nobody at parking lot, nobody at Lanes, nobody

at Folly. Everybody was at Old Garden.

-Al was at demo day at Alexander Bay in NY. 2 hours north of Syracuse in

the St Lawrence. Beautiful – clear – 65 degrees. Al says it should be on everybody’s bucket list. It’s 450 miles. John F says it’s a good place to spend

3-4 days; he’s done it several times. Al told an amazing story about a castle / love story, with lots of Q&A.

-Jim B went to White Beach the last 2 weekends. Saw sea raven. Somebody lost a camera but they found it on the next dive.

-Dive this weekend: 8:45 BK parking lot Sunday. Ellen will send email letting everybody know the change in time.

Old Business: Jim has contacted his friend in Nahant. We can dive there, but need to drop gear and then park further away. Visibility not expected to be good this weekend, so when are we looking at? Let’s plan for 10/28, see what the weather looks like for the weekend by next Thursday.

New Business: Club should send a card to Becca Tyning, aunt of Lizzi Marriott.

General Discussion: Graves Light is for sale.

Dive Talk

-Susan was at White’s beach with a student and caught a retarded lobster.

-Jim B dove at OGB w/ Undersea Divers. Tide was in, so got over 60 ft. One guy ran out of air, so he had to come up before his 3 min safety stop

was over.

-Jack did some reservoir dives for Rockport. 2 dives to 100 feet to check strainers in Carlson’s quarry.

Checked out a dam to about 20 ft. Then into Cape Pond, lots of mud, to check out pipeline that sits on a trestle.

-Hans dove in Winnipesaukee last week. Was looking for a resort motorboat. Found a steel hulled vessel, ~ 60 ft. Looking for the resorter (62’ mahogany resort boat) and a safe that was seen previously. Found 12 wrecks in Winnipesaukee this year, but hasn’t made it into salt water yet this year. Hans will send u- tube access to Vinny to forward. Lobsters suck, but the tides aren’t too bad. - Cool stuff has been found under the Charlestown bridge. Hans mentioned a cool Colt, and the rifles found a prior summer.

-Susan spoke with a friend who has been wreck diving in the Great Lakes who dove a coal ship that had broken in half. He found 2 legs sticking out from under the coal in the deeper half. Visibility was 150 ft.

-Susan is back from the Philippines; she did 85 dives on her trip. Has a movie clip of whale sharks. Went to get more knowledge about the area before running trips. The dives were phenomenal! Verde Island is at the top of her list. Had a fun encounter with a couple of sea snakes. She will do a presentation for the Club, maybe in December. Has underwater pictures, and above water too. Av temp 86, viz 80-100. Dove with thresher sharks also.

-Dive this weekend: Conditions not expected to be good this weekend.

Another diver with us took this one.
The charter we took to the Hyde wreck

Air Bubbles – November 2012

The New Guy has been Diving

Jim Barbara

Becoming a certified diver this past summer has changed my life in some very positive ways. But before I dive right into the diving stuff, I found out that my longtime friend, Steve Lilley, from 7th grade all the way to being my roommate in college has been a diver since 1992. In fact, his wife and both his teen boys are all open water certified divers. He lives in North Carolina and we had not seen each other since the late eighties. When he found out through Facebook that I had become a diver, we started talking again and soon a trip to dive together in NC was put into motion.

Steve had already booked a charter with Aquatic Safaris in Wilmington, NC to dive the Hyde, a wreck 18 miles off the coast of Wilmington. I found the cheap flight and was off to dive with my best friend! He is Nitrox certified and I decided to get certified for Nitrox as well. He got a dive instructor to dive with us since the top of the wreck is a few feet over 60.

The harbor area was fairly calm and we were on a larger 48 foot boat. But after we left the harbor the wave and chop increased to 4 to 6 foot waves. I wore a Transderm patch to prevent sea sickness, but after the hour long trip to get to the dive sight and once we anchored, that nauseous feeling started to slowly wash over me. I was glad we got our gear ready while in the docks because

the waves were so rough I don’t think I would have been able to gear up until we anchored, but then I would have been really been sick. Heck, just sitting and putting on my stretchy thin suit was tough enough while the boat hit the waves. One person threw up in front of Steve and me right on her fins!

I took the giant stride in and I held onto the trail line until my dive buddies were in with me. We then descended moving along the drop line to the wreck. The anchor line descended to a spot mid-ship on the deck. It was incredible as we went down! There were 4 to 5 foot barracudas all around and big schools of fish. To those of you who have done this before, I am sure you can recall the feeling when you first saw enormous numbers of marine life on a dive. I felt different after witnessing so much life in action under the sea. We went to the port side of the wreck and down along the bow. We were looking for sharks as we went

around the outside of the boat across the bow to the starboard side. As a newer diver, I looked at my dive computer and my gauges probably every minute or so as well as being conscience of any squeeze on my mask and ears. I felt very comfortable, neutrally buoyant and balanced. I kept within a few feet my buddies as we followed our dive plan around to the stern then back to the front of the boat and across the top deck. I watched a barracuda shoot across chasing something. It was like a high speed missile which startled me with its velocity. Steve saw a shark in the distance so we went to the back of the boat and down and saw a huge sand tiger shark with a circle of fish around its middle! That

Air Bubbles – November 2012

was my first scuba shark encounter. It was thrilling and not scary at all. We then went across the port side and back up to the deck of the boat. I had 1000 psi left so we went for a 3 minute safety stop. The safety bar moved up and down fairly violently but I stayed near it and kept myself neutral for the 3 minutes.

I had gotten nauseous during the surface interval and had to get off the boat and snorkel while holding the trail lines. I held the rope and watched the barracuda below me and relaxed. It made me feel a little better, but as soon I got back on the boat to gear up, the back and forth, and side to side rocking made me nauseous again. Steve thought we should switch tanks, since I was using more air and he had a larger tank. He thought we would have more bottom time together with this plan. I agreed. I was unscrewing the yoke knob while jabbering on to Steve about how cool this is and I turned it too many times and realized I had literally

screwed up as I heard the knob go ker-plunk into the water. This could have meant the dive was over, but the crew had a knob that fit and let me borrow it. After another giant stride, the schools of fish this time were even more enormous, like a 3 story building. I was in awe. We noticed a bit of current and surge but we continued with our plan along the deck. We briefly looked for the yoke knob but it was most likely somewhere in the wreck, so we stopped thinking about it. We when back across the starboard side again, but continued to the back of the boat where there was a below deck filled with sand tiger sharks! There were at least 5 sharks milling about in there. They came out and were over our heads and under

our feet. One was just a foot or two from Steve and he did not even know it.

But the diving in NC did not stop with the end of this charter. The next day Steve took me to the James M. Robertson Quarry, in a town called Blanch. Located right next to an old closed prison, this quarry is a scuba divers’ playground. Walked into the quarry to a rack where you put your fins on and get ready to dive.

There's a mirror to be sure your mask is under your hood. The Piedmont Diving and Rescue Association

enjoys a few pranks including the placement of a

plastic skeleton on a bed that is sitting on the

bottom, No Smoking sign in the cockpit of plane

that is sitting down there. One of Steve’s quarry

diving buddies, Karen, brought the skeleton and

the sign as well as plastic ties to mount the stuff

on the bottom for fun. I was put in charge of the

No Smoking sign to hold that we were going to

mount in the window of a plane’s cockpit. But

first we strapped the skeleton to the bed at around

30 ft. It took some time and I helped to hold him

down as well as reinsert one of his arms when it

fell off. We then swam a little deeper to the

plane and Steve let me work this second job pretty

much with Karen. She had me clip the ties once it

was mounted. We then went on down to 74 feet

Karen and I kept the air smoke free!

to a hollowed out school bus with a large custom

hatch hole in the top. I made my way through the bus which gave the feeling of a very easy and safe wreck

dive. Then we went out to a van and then to a boat. We saw small fresh water jelly fish along the way and

looked for paddlefish the quarry was stocked with years ago. We made our way back to the platform near the sleeping skeleton (by the way, the skeleton’s name is Omar). After a 3 minute safety stop, Karen gave Omar a kiss goodbye and we surfaced. The next dive was a perimeter swim around the quarry to the Shark

Crossing and the “Shark Tank” which was a big steel liquid container from the back of a tractor trailer. No freshwater sharks were seen.

At one point off in the distance we did see a paddlefish. Then we happened upon a bunch of the freshwater jellyfish. Near the end of the perimeter swim there is a buoyancy test frame. I hit my tank at least twice trying to stay neutral. Steve said you need to have your belly millimeters from the frame to make it. We then went to another platform where there was a bowling ball and I spun it on my finger. It had mass but no weight. Steve then handed me the can of Cheez Whiz and I sprayed wormy strands for the bream which flocked around and feasted. It was a really fun.

The coolest thing we did in the quarry was on the third dive where we stayed pretty shallow, about 25 feet, and dumped all our BC air so we could stand on the bottom. We took off our fins, laid them on the platform and walked around like astronauts on the moon!

The Bay State Council of Divers (BSC) is a diver’s advocacy group. The BSC monitors local, state and federal regulations that may affect the recreational diving community in Massachusetts. When required, the BSC represents the interests of the diving community in these matters.

The BSC serves as a liaison between dive clubs and dive stores to promote recreational diving activity in Massachusetts. All divers are encouraged to support the BSC with an annual contribution of $5. Your contribution will allow the BSC to continue to be a strong advocate for the recreational diving community in Massachusetts.
