President’s Messages - October 2012

Happy Fall! Can't believe it's October already. Luckily the weather was great for the picnic, even if the diving conditions for the Bay State Council Treasure Hunt weren't the best. Guess you can't have everything. For those of us that dove that day, we still had a fun time, even if we couldn't find any of the marbles we were looking for. And don't make any jokes that I lost my marbles a long time ago!

A big thank you to all who came to the picnic and those that helped out to make it such a successful event. Everyone's contributions, be it food, cooking, desserts, or just bringing yourself and others, were what made it so great!

Since it is October, banquet tickets will be going on sale soon. Keep your eyes open for that. It's also time to start thinking for officers for next year. If you have any questions about what exactly that could entail, or you might be interested in being an officer, please speak with one of us. We'd be happy to share our wisdom!

Finally, I'd like to thank our newest member, and Diver of the Month, Jim Barbara, for taking on the role of AV guy! A vital role and we all thank you for it. And, also for braving the low vis and surgy conditions of the Treasure Hunt. And thank you to Member of the Month, Lauren Byrne, for lugging around that giant bag with all the stuff for the meetings and for being a good VP.

Happy diving!

Meg!

Tobermory Diving

Jim Barbara

During the last week of August, I took my family on our annual vacation to visit my Canadian wife’s relatives in Ontario. They have a remote, quiet cottage on Lake Huron in a tiny town called Bluewater. After becoming a certified open water diver this summer, I knew I had to do some diving in that fresh water. After asking around, I found out that Tobermory, Ontario is the wreck diving capital of Lake Huron! Jim Hicks of Boston Scuba recommended I work with Larry Graham’s dive shop, Diver’s Den, in the Little Tub Harbour dock area there in Tobermory (tourist area). I am glad I took his recommendation because they were fantastic. They were super friendly and knowledgeable, plus the dive shop was really nice. They helped me with rental scuba gear and geared my teens up for snorkeling. Plus, they had a cart to bring everything to the boat!

The weather was sunny and 70F and there was almost no wind. It was beautiful day to be on the water. Larry captained the Deep Obsession, a great 45’ diving boat, with plenty of space. It took us about

20 minutes to get to the first wreck, the W. L. Wetmore, a steam ship built in 1871 and sunk after hitting the rocks during a storm in 1901. The wreck was 25’ down. Although I had heard a lot about how cold the waters were in the Georgian Bay of Lake Huron, the bottom temp was a comfy 68F and no current.

The Wetmore deck was intact although the hull on the port and starboard looked collapsed. The stern was very much intact. And there was all kinds of cool stuff down there, the propeller, the rudder, the anchor and a big pile of chain. And the viz…well, several divers agreed it was at least 50’. But the wreck was 220’ from bow to stern and I swear I could see from end to end. The coolest part was the boiler, still sticking up in the water like it was ready for steam.

The second dive was the Sweepstakes, a 120’ schooner that was also damaged in a storm but was towed to the Big Tub Harbour and sank in 1885. It was at a depth of just 20’. What was fascinating to me was that the ship looks like you could almost lift bag it up, pump it out and send it back out in the harbor (well, maybe patch the holes in the hull, but other than that…). There are several hatches on the deck that I entered, but the Canadian Park Services put bars in so that you cannot move horizontally into the hull. But for me, it was exciting to move downward into the caged hatches and look across the spooky dark interior of the wreck. At the stern, there was a winch that looked like it was ready to hoist the anchor. The viz was not quite as good here as it was in the harbor…only 40’. In terms of fish and plant life, there’s not much to see. Everything was coated with the dull green freshwater algae and the small fish I did not identify. The dives here are all about the perfectly preserved 100 year old ship wrecks. These were my first non-overhead wreck dives and the most exciting stuff I have seen thus far. I should say that it was only dive #7 and #8, including my open water dives. I cannot wait to see what is next!
